What should an AI consulting quote include?
There is no single Australian AI consulting rate that fits every project. Compare scope and total ownership cost before comparing headline prices.

Separate discovery, delivery and operation.
An assessment or workshop is a different purchase from a production integration. Ask the provider to separate the initial discovery, build, deployment, training and ongoing support.
Do not treat a search-ad bid or a consultant’s hourly rate as a project budget. Neither establishes how much work your situation needs.
Ask for the costs that arrive after launch.
Usage-based model calls, software subscriptions, hosting, data storage and monitoring can continue after the consultant finishes. Request an explanation of the assumptions, expected usage and what would make costs rise.
- Which recurring tools will we pay for, and in whose accounts?
- Is support included, capped or billed separately?
- What happens if we need to change vendors or models?
Compare the same deliverables.
Request a written scope with inclusions, exclusions, dependencies and acceptance criteria. Check whether testing covers failures, permissions, data handling and human review.
If one quote is much cheaper, ask what is missing before assuming it is more efficient. If another is more expensive, ask what additional result or risk reduction it buys.
Agree on a stop or continue decision.
Define the evidence that would justify expanding the work. A pilot that reveals a poor fit can still be useful when it prevents a larger commitment.
Record the baseline before implementation and review the actual result afterwards. Proposed savings, testimonials and your own measured return are different kinds of evidence.
